It cleans many things from the air. But one of the main ones that causes the most problems for living organisms is sulfur dioxide (SO2) because when that mixes with water it creates an acid (H2SO4 or sulfuric acid), hence acid rain. As well CO2 (carbon dioxide) when mixed with water will also create an acid (H2CO3 or carbonic acid) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) will also create an acid when mixed with water (HNO3 or nitric acid).
These can lower the pH of surface water and soil which can have severe consequences on plant and animal life.
